Each year, the David R. Cheriton Research Symposium holds a poster competition for graduate students. In total, 29 graduate students participated in the 2017 competition.

Posters were on display in the Great Hall, as students explained the theory behind and the results and impacts of their research to David R. Cheriton and a panel of judges.

Recent PhD graduate Martin Derka, his supervisor Professor Therese Biedl and colleagues Markus Chimani and Petra Mutzel received the best paper award for “Crossing number for graphs with bounded pathwidth,” which will be presented at ISAAC 2017 — the 28^th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation.

Xu Chu successfully defended his PhD in August 2017. He was supervised by Professor Ihab Ilyas, a member of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science’s Data Systems Group.

Computer scientists at the University of Waterloo have developed a smartphone app that helps people learn the art of taking great selfies.

Inside the app is an algorithm that directs the user where to position the camera allowing them to take the best shot possible.

Professor Maura R. Grossman has been named a recipient of the 2017 Fastcase 50 award. This annual award conferred since 2011 by legal publishing company Fastcase recognizes 50 innovators, visionaries and leaders in law.
